School Rugby Managers helping rugby go from strength to strength in schools

To support the growth of rugby in schools, the RFU has established a network of School Rugby Managers (SRMs) who work with schools in their area to embed rugby into the curriculum and strengthen links with local rugby clubs.

We are delighted to be the School Rugby Manager for Bedford.

Across the country, 40 SRMs have helped children and young people from primary and secondary schools get involved in playing T1 Rugby.

SRM’s are in place to help introduce new state schools to rugby, with the RFU target of introducing 5,000 new state primary and secondary schools to the sport by 2027.

SRM’s focus on embedding rugby into the school curriculum and strengthening links between schools and local rugby clubs. These managers work to increase participation, particularly in state schools, and to support the development of rugby at the grassroots level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Embedding Rugby in Schools:

School Rugby Managers (SRMs) work with schools to integrate rugby into the curriculum and extracurricular activities.

  • Strengthening School-Club Links:

They facilitate connections between schools and local rugby clubs to create pathways for young players.

  • Promoting Participation:

SRMs encourage participation in rugby, especially in state schools, and aim to introduce the sport to new schools.

  • Supporting Teachers and Leaders:

They provide training and resources to teachers and young leaders to help them confidently deliver rugby programs.

  • Utilizing T1 Rugby:

SRMs promote T1 Rugby, a non-contact version of the game, to make it easier for schools to introduce rugby to their students.

Impact:

  • Increased Participation:

SRMs are helping to grow the number of children and young people playing rugby in schools.

  • New Schools Introduced:

They are working towards the RFU target of introducing 5,000 new state primary and secondary schools to the sport by 2027.

  • Enhanced Teacher Confidence:

Training and mentoring efforts are equipping teachers with the skills and confidence to deliver rugby programs effectively.

  • Stronger School-Club Relationships:

The work of SRMs is helping to build stronger connections between schools and local rugby clubs.
