Building Confidence and Connection Through Ability Blues Inclusive Multisport Sessions
Person A began attending our Ability Blues inclusive multisport sessions with the encouragement of his mum, who was keen to help him develop his social skills and confidence. As a young person with autism, he initially found it challenging to engage with others and was often very quiet and reserved in group environments. When Person A first joined the sessions, he was noticeably withdrawn. He spoke very little, kept himself to himself, and showed limited interaction with both coaches and peers. Our sessions are designed to be inclusive, supportive, and adaptable to individual needs. Coaches focused on creating a safe and welcoming space for Person A, using consistent routines, positive reinforcement, and gentle encouragement to help him feel comfortable. Over time, Person A’s confidence began to grow. Gradually, he started to engage more during activities, communicate with coaches, and interact with other participants. His transformation has been remarkable he is now a highly active and enthusiastic member of the group.
We have also had the opportunity to deliver sessions within the autism provision at Person A’s school. This has allowed us to support him in a different environment and see how his confidence transfers beyond our Saturday sessions. In this setting, Person A has continued to thrive. His ability to engage, lead by example, and socialise has made him a key member of both groups. Seeing him in both environments has reinforced the positive impact of consistent, inclusive support. Person A’s journey highlights the power of inclusive sport in supporting social development and personal growth. From being closed off and hesitant, he has become a confident, sociable, and engaged individual who plays an important role within both his school and Ability Blues communities.
Ability Blues inclusive multisport sessions can make a meaningful difference. By providing a supportive and adaptable environment, we empower young people to build confidence, develop social skills, and form lasting connections.
