Foundation takes essential skills to the next level

We are strengthening our support for young people across Bedfordshire by embedding essential skills at the heart of our delivery, using the nationally recognised Skills Builder framework to guide and shape our programmes.

As the charitable arm of Bedford Blues, our work is built on the proud history of a club that has been central to the town for generations. Bedford Blues represents more than rugby, it represents identity, pride and aspiration. We believe local professional sport has a powerful role in inspiring young people, providing role models and helping them to believe in what they can achieve.

This approach comes at a time of significant national change. In May 2026, the Government announced over £1 billion of investment into PE and school sport, alongside a move towards a new partnerships-based model designed to provide more targeted support and reduce inequalities in access to activity. At the same time, the Every Child Achieving and Thriving White Paper, published in February 2026, sets out a long-term vision for education that prioritises inclusion, wellbeing and preparation for adulthood, alongside academic success. Together, these changes highlight a national shift towards a more holistic approach to supporting young people.

In response, we are using the Skills Builder framework to deliver a structured approach to developing key skills such as communication, teamwork, resilience and problem-solving across all our programmes. This ensures young people can recognise their progress, build confidence and apply their learning beyond the classroom.

At the centre of this work is our Tackle LIFE programme, our early intervention offer delivered in primary schools, secondary schools and further education. Tackle LIFE supports young people who may be at risk of disengagement, helping to address challenging behaviour, improve mental health and support them to thrive in school.

Delivered by trained staff and professional coaches, the programme combines classroom learning with sport-led activity, using rugby to teach positive behaviours and life skills. By embedding the Skills Builder framework, each session is intentional, measurable and aligned with both local needs and national priorities.
